Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s Insulin Controversy in Tihar Jail Explained

New Delhi: Tensions rise as Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and a Type 2 diabetic, claims he has been denied necessary insulin injections while detained in Tihar Jail. Kejriwal, arrested on March 21 over allegations related to a liquor policy scam, has stirred controversy regarding his diet and health management behind bars.

During a recent court session, Kejriwal’s legal team argued against the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) accusation that he intentionally consumed sugary foods to secure medical bail. The Chief Minister emphasized his health rights, questioning if being in jail means losing dignity and access to essential healthcare.

Represented by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Kejriwal highlighted that despite his medical prescription of 50 units of insulin daily, he has been deprived of this critical treatment for nearly a month. He countered the ED’s claims by stating that his diet included only three meals with mangoes, a fruitless sugary than rice, as per his doctor’s diet chart approved prior to his arrest.

The ED responded by pointing out discrepancies in Kejriwal’s diet and insisted that the jail provided adequate medical care. The agency also expressed concerns over the misuse of legal meeting privileges in the past.

The court has postponed its decision to Monday, leaving Kejriwal to contend with his health concerns over the weekend. This case has attracted significant attention, highlighting potential human rights issues regarding the treatment of prisoners with health conditions.
