On Friday, the French government issued a stern travel advisory, urging its citizens to avoid all travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories for the immediate future. This announcement was made by the office of French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, according to information provided to AFP. The advisory comes in the wake of increased tensions across the region, notably due to recent hostilities involving Iran and Israel.
Iran has vowed retaliation following an Israeli assault on its consulate in Syria on April 1, which resulted in the deaths of seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, including two high-ranking generals. This incident has heightened concerns about the potential for further violence in the region.
Amidst these escalating tensions, Minister Sejourne convened an emergency meeting where he ordered the evacuation of family members of French diplomats stationed in Iran. He also directed that no French civil servants be deployed on assignments to any of the mentioned countries during this volatile period.
Meanwhile, the situation between Israel and Palestinian militant groups has been deteriorating. Since a significant attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, Israel has conducted numerous bombings in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s military actions have also intensified against Iranian forces and their affiliates in both Syria and Lebanon.
The ongoing conflict has also seen persistent exchanges of fire across the border between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group, which is backed by Iran. This series of confrontations began with the onset of the most recent conflict in Gaza and has been a daily occurrence, contributing to the instability in the region. The French government’s travel advisory is a response to these unfolding events and the unpredictable security environment they have created.
